5 Black Wall Design Ideas – Decorating with Black

Black walls.  Who would have ever thought we’d consider painting walls black?

Well, I’m a huge fan of black.  Black accents, black windows, black doors, etc.  But black walls scared me…until now.

What a stunning and impactful way to feature art or highlight furniture. Design is often about contrast and depth.  What is more powerful than a high contrast statement than a feature wall or an entire room painted black?

This photo is a great example of a just a feature wall of matte black used to create a high contrast focal point in this living room.  It’s highlighting the art in the most dramatic of ways, it’s creating that depth that draws you into the room, and it’s allowing the other light colors and textures and patterns in the furniture to pop.  This room to me is stunning!

Black can go Beyond paint….

There is a huge assortment of black wallpaper available that will also add texture to the room.  Here you can dress it up with a metallic black, go more textural with a grass cloth – Check out Phillip Jeffries (www.phillipjeffries.com) to see the vast array of choices.

The powder room above is designed by Courtney Hill Interiors, uses the Phillip Jeffries Voyage collection.  A powder room is a great room for making a statement in a small space.

I love the texture of the dark stained bamboo wall and the shimmer of the textured grasscloth wallpaper in this master bedroom. https://www.houzz.com/photos/1635936/Glamorous-Boudoir-contemporary-bedroom-minneapolis

The black paint on shiplap brings in a more casual feel, but still adds an amazing finish to this bathroom.  See how the floor and vanity each pop and creates a beautiful contrast with the walls.

And for those of you who have no fear, go bold!  An entire room can be so glamourous and it won’t necessarily be dark.  Be sure to use dark colors in rooms that get a lot of natural light.
The use of light flooring and furniture in these rooms balances the dark walls for a warm, sophisticated feel.
